Sears Closing More Stores

Sears ups September store closures to 78

Sears noted in its first-quarter earnings report that it identified 100 stores as unprofitable, and marked 63 for closure in September.

Since then it has added another 16 to the list — five more on June 6, and another 10 last week, including nine Sears and one Kmart location.

Liquidation sales are set to start as early as July 13 for the latest batch of targeted stores and have already begun for the balance.

Sears said the closings are part of its ongoing effort to streamline operations and focus on its most profitable locations. Nevertheless, store closures accounted for nearly two-thirds of its 31 percent first-quarter sales decline, the retailer reported.
