The Colony, Texas — Nebraska Furniture Mart (NFM) marked another milestone this week in the construction of its 1.9 million-square-foot showroom, office and warehouse complex here in this Dallas suburb.
One year after breaking ground on the project, construction workers hoisted the facility’s final beam into place yesterday in a ceremony attended by management, the town’s mayor and other local guests.
“Watching the building come out of the ground has been very exciting,” said NFM Texas store director Ed Lipsett. “We are very pleased with the progress, and more importantly we are thrilled with the positive response we have received thus far from the local community and surrounding Dallas/Fort Worth area.”
The showroom, set to open in spring of 2015, will be the largest-volume home furnishings store in North America, the retailer said, and will anchor the company’s planned 433-acre, $1.5 billion shopping and entertainment center here dubbed Grandscape.
A two-time winner of TWICE’s Excellence in Retailing Awards, NFM also operates mega-emporiums in Omaha, Neb., and Kansas City, Kan. The business was founded with $500 by Rose Blumkin in the basement of her husband’s Omaha pawn shop in 1937, and became one of the nation’s largest furniture, bedding, CE, majap and flooring retailers by offering an expansive assortment at competitive prices, and by adhering to Rose’s dictate to “Sell cheap and tell the truth.”
Billionaire investor Warren Buffet acquired a majority stake in NFM in 1983.
