Lowe’s Testing Samsung Shops: Report

MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Lowe’s is reportedly testing a store-within-a-store format for Samsung appliances.

The pilot shops are being trialed in two locations, according to Janney retail hardlines analyst David Strasser, who visited one of the stores.

In a research note, Strasser described the installation as “impressive” and “high-end,” although Lowe’s is also testing other Samsung shop concepts including one that relies on touch-screen displays, he said.

Both formats feature minimal sales-floor inventory, a possible limitation that needs to be further addressed, he observed.

The move mirrors Samsung’s rollout of store-within-a-store mobile and 4K UHD TV sections throughout Best Buy’s store base, which were soon followed by additional vendor-branded shops.

The Lowe’s-Samsung partnership dates back to September 2005, when the first Samsung-branded majaps hit the No. 2 home improvement chain’s floors.

Lowe’s is the country’s No. 1 white-goods retailer by dollar volume, displacing long-reigning majap leader Sears in 2013, according to TWICE’s Top 100 Major Appliance Retailers report.

Samsung, which targeted the U.S. majap market in major way in 2002, is presently the country’s fifth-largest major appliance brand, with unabashed aspirations for first place. The company recently put majap industry veteran John Herrington in charge of its U.S. white-goods business, ostensibly to close the gap.
