HiFi Buys Buckhead Open For Business

Atlanta — The HiFi Buys brand returned to Buckhead last week where the storied chain opened its first showroom 42 years ago.

The return represented a re-christening for Audio Alternative, a 20-year-old audio specialty dealer that adopted the brand and relocated to HiFi Buys’ original turf in this upscale Atlanta district.

On hand for the grand opening of HiFi Buys Buckhead were owner/CEO Alan Jones, HiFi Buys founder Mel Silverman and former Atlanta mayor Sam Massell, who officiated at the ribbon cutting.

The new Peachtree Road showroom isn’t the only place where the HiFi Buys flag flies — Nashville Audio Video Electronics had previously assumed the brand for its Tennessee business, renamed HiFi Buys Nashville.

Silverman founded HiFi Buys here in 1973. Over the next two decades it grew into a 10-store audio specialty chain pulling in $94 million annually.

The business was sold to Tweeter, Inc. in 1997 for $120 million, and 10 years later most of its stores were shuttered along with other closures nationwide as Tweeter Home Entertainment entered its final death spiral.

The HiFi Buys brand, along with the trademarks of Tweeter and other regional acquisitions like Sound Advice, Dow Stereo and Bryn Mawr, was put up for auction in a 2009 bankruptcy sale.
