Handmade At Amazon Puts Etsy On Notice

Next up in Amazon’s crosshairs: Etsy.

The e-tailer announced Handmade at Amazon this morning, a section offering more than 80,000 “factory-free” products from over 60 counties. Products will include jewelry, artwork, furniture and party supplies, among other thing. As the name indicates, they must be made by hand, although small businesses with 20 or fewer employees are eligible, as are “collectives” with fewer than 100 people.

Those who wish to sell on the platform must fill out an application. After the intial screening, an Amazon spokesman told us it will periodically audit sellers to “ensure that they are only listing items that meet our definition of Handmade.” Products that fail to meet the criteria will be removed. A customer complaint can also trigger an investigation, he said.

Handmade’s clear competitor, Etsy, came under recent fire when that artisan site went in a different direction, announcing it would help makers find manufacturing partners.

In other Amazon-related news, Bloomberg reported the e-tailer is exploring its own pay-TV service.
