`Destiny’ Sets PlayStation Store Records

Foster City, Calif. – Sony Computer Entertainment America said Thursday that September marked the biggest month ever for PlayStation Store revenue in the Americas.

The achievement was led by the launch of Activision and Bungie’s “Destiny,” which broke PlayStation Network sales records across several categories, including No. 1 in pre-orders, day one sales, and week one sales.

Sony said that a month since the game’s launch, engagement among PlayStation fans continues to soar, as the game continues as the most-played title on the PlayStation 4 (PS4) system with 125 million hours of gameplay.

According to Activision internal estimates, the PS4 system is the top platform worldwide for Destiny based on units sold through as of Oct. 4, 2014.

“September 2014 was a record-breaking month for PlayStation’s digital business, thanks in large part to the success of ‘Destiny’,” stated Eric Lempel, Sony Network Entertainment Internation VP. “Last month’s PlayStation Store revenue increased nearly 90 percent compared with Sept. 2013. Working closely with Activision and Bungie, we wanted to make the launch of ‘Destiny’ a special experience for PlayStation fans. We’re thrilled to see this high engagement from PS4 and PS3 owners.”

Other key milestones from “Destiny” on PlayStation include:

• Total gameplay hours for “Destiny” are 5 times higher than the second most-played title;

• More than 450,000 hours of live gameplay were broadcast via the PS4 system’s SHARE functionality;

• New PlayStation Plus memberships increased 115 percent from the week prior to the “Destiny” launch; and

• The limited-edition “Destiny:” PS4 bundle helped drive PS4 hardware sales to its biggest month in 2014.

In addition to “Destiny,” the September results for the PS Store were propelled by key titles including, “inFAMOUS First Light” and “The Last of Us Remastered.”

Some of that success was also attributed to more convenient store features including digital game pre-loading and Play As You Download.
