Cowboy Maloney’s Lassos Larger Digs

Echoing Roy Rogers’ country western classic, Cowboy Maloney’s told its Columbus, Miss., landlord last year, “Don’t fence me in.”

And with that the 13-store CE, appliance and furniture chain left its 10,000-square-foot leased home of 22 years in the local Leigh Mall and purchased a 36,000-square-foot former furniture store across the street.

Now, months later — and nearly one year after opening its 13th location near Ole Miss — the company has cut the ribbon on a new, expanded showroom designed to better serve this Northeast Mississippi town.

According to chairman Con Maloney, the quest for greater elbow room was spurred by an economic boom within the so-called Golden Triangle area, which is bordered by Columbus, Starkville and West Point and was featured on Sixty Minutes, PBS and in The Atlantic.

“With the economy booming … it only made sense to purchase the 36,000-square-foot building,” he said.

Added brother and company president Eddie Maloney: “Columbus has always been a good market for us. Now, with the bigger footprint, we are able to display more furniture, bedding, electronics and of course, appliances.  We feel with this new location we can better serve the people of the Golden Triangle.”

The NATM retailer and TWICE award winner was founded by their dad “Cowboy” as a lumber yard in 1952, and went on to score a number of industry firsts, including the very first sales of a DirecTV home satellite system and Sirius satellite car radio kit. Since then the chain has diversified into furniture, bedding, luxury appliances and the builder channel to help blunt softness in CE.

Brother and executive VP Johnny Maloney added that the larger store can offer customers greater savings through guaranteed lowest prices, extended financing and a no-credit-check program that offers a 90-day option to pay.
