Black Friday 2016 Watch: Walmart Wants To Make In-Store Checkout Easier Than Ever

Walmart was next up for a peek at its holiday playbook, which the chain said will include a $125 TCL Roku TV throughout the selling season.

The retail giant intends to streamline the holiday mayhem this year, promising to bolster its ranks of checkout-line employees and increase the number of items eligible for its in-store Pickup service.

Walmart, which has embarked on a large-scale mission to improve its e-commerce strategy, also said it will add millions of items to Walmart.com in the coming months. According to the chain, it has grown the number of third-party sellers on its site by 30-fold in the last 12 months.

According to Walmart, it receives up to five times as many same-day pickup orders vs. a non-holiday week, and so it will allocate more staff in these areas of the store. It is also designating a pickup manager in every store for the first time.

The chain will transform existing employees into what it’s calling “holiday helpers” to help manage traffic during the checkout process, with these yellow-vested, candy-toting employees increased during peak hours. The helpers, whom consumers will begin seeing Nov. 4, are also tasked with hunting down items shoppers may have forgotten. 

The retailer detailed its commitment to e-commerce growth at its annual investors meeting earlier this month. It addition to its recent acquisition of Jet.com and a series of other new initiatives, Walmart has said it will slow down new-store openings in order to focus on digital growth.

In terms of deals, Walmart provided few clues on doorbusters. It did say it will extend last year’s Black Friday deal of a $125 Roku 32-inch HDTV throughout November and December.

It also plans to post a list on its website of the top 20 items beginning Nov. 1.
