Barnes & Noble Expands Video Selection For Nook Tablets

New York — Barnes & Noble isn’t giving up on its Nook tablets and announced partnerships with more content suppliers to make more TV shows and movies available for streaming or download to the 7-inch Nook HD and 9-inch Nook HD+ tablets.

Revenues in the company’s Nook business segment fell in the company’s fiscal third quarter by 25.9 percent to $316 million, which consists of device, content and accessory sales. Nook unit sales were lower, but digital content sales rose 6.8 percent.

The major studios and content partners that will license content to B&N are Lionsgate, MGM, Paramount Pictures, Relativity Media, National Geographic, Little Pim and Film Buff. The licensing agreements will bring “thousands” more movies and TV shows to the company’s Nook Video service, including “The Hunger Games,” the “Twilight” series, “Tyler Perry’s Madea Gets a Job,” “Skyfall,” “Rocky,” “Fargo,” “Flight,” “Paranormal Activity 4,” “Act of Valor,” “Safe Haven,” and “House at the End of the Street.” Independent films from Film Buff’s catalog include “Charles Swan” and “Exit from the Gift Shop” and TV shows such as “Mad Men,” “Border Wars,” “Great Migrations,” and “Amazing Planet.” Educational content will come from Little Pim, described as the leading foreign language learning program for young children.

The two tablets are the industry’s first UltraViolet-enabled tablets, the company noted. Consumers who buy DVDs and Blu-ray Discs with the UltraViolet logo can add titles to their UltraViolet collection to stream or download them to the tablets from the Nook Cloud service.
