Amazon Reports Sales Gain, But $7M Q2 Loss

Seattle – Amazon.com reported 22 percent higher sales but a $7 million net loss in the second quarter ended June 30.

Net loss was $7 million in the second quarter compared with net income of $7 million in second quarter 2012.

Net sales increased 22 percent to $15.70 billion in the second quarter, compared with $12.83 billion in second quarter 2012. Excluding the $392 million unfavorable impact from year-over-year changes in foreign exchange rates throughout the quarter, net sales grew 25 percent compared with second quarter 2012.

Operating income decreased 26 percent to $79 million in the second quarter, compared with $107 million in second quarter 2012. The unfavorable impact from year-over-year changes in foreign exchange rates throughout the quarter on operating income was $18 million.

In Amazon.com’s North America electronics and other general merchandise segment sales were up by almost a third from $4.94 billion in the prior year’s second quarter to $6.48 billion this year.

Entire North American segment sales were $9.5 billion in the quarter up from the prior year’s $7.3 billion. Segment operating income was $409 million up from the prior year’s $344 million.

In its third quarter guidance Amazon said Net sales are expected to be between $15.45 billion and $17.15 billion, or to grow between 12 and 24 percent compared with third quarter 2012.

Operating loss is expected to be between $440 million and $65 million, compared to $28 million in third quarter 2012.
