Amazon Devices On Fire Over Black Friday Weekend

Amazon’s family of proprietary tech products got a running start to its holiday haul last weekend.

The world’s largest e-tailer said it sold millions of its private-label devices over the three-day period, three times as many as last year, and cited its $50 Fire Tablet (on sale for $35) and $40 Fire TV Stick (sale priced at $25) as the top two sellers site-wide on Black Friday.

The overall Fire tablet line tripled in sales volume over the weekend, and Fire TV, the larger set-top version of the Stick, saw sales soar six-fold year over year, making it the No. 1 streaming-media player across all retailers, Amazon said. However, a report this week from Strategy Analytics ranked the device third in global market share last quarter.

Also on fire was Amazon Echo, the company’s smart wireless speaker, which became the site’s best-selling product priced $100 or more on its first Black Friday in the market.

The Kindle line was no slouch either, the e-tailer reported, with hundreds of thousands of the e-readers sold over the weekend.

“This has already been the biggest holiday shopping season for Amazon devices, and we’re energized by the year over year growth for all of our product categories,” noted Amazon devices senior VP Dave Limp.

He added that the Fire tablet, with its sub-$50 price point and $250 six-pack bundle, has “reached a tipping point” as the company’s fastest-selling tablet ever, prompting it to ramp up production “to build millions more.”
