Global Q2 Notebook Shipments Up 1%

Santa Clara, Calif. — After seven consecutive quarters of shipment declines, the global notebook PC market showed slight improvement in the second quarter (Q2) of 2014, according to NPD DisplaySearch mobile PC shipment and forecast numbers.

The market research firm said global notebook PC shipments rose 1 percent over the same period last year to 45.1 million units.

Among the regions with the biggest gains were North America and Western Europe, which both tallied double digit growth levels in the quarter.

Hisakazu Torii, NPD DisplaySearch smart application research VP, attributed the results to “a combination of commercial PC replacement cycles and Windows XP migration in 2014.”

“The notebook PC market has also benefited from the launch of Chromebooks and other low-priced notebook PCs,” Torii said.

Year-over-year growth for the top five notebook PC brands collectively reached 16 percent in Q2 2014. This followed a decline of 20 percent a year ago.

The research firm said Lenovo Group reported strong sales in Europe, China, and Latin America, and overtook HP to lead the market with an 18 percent shipment unit share.

Asus took the No. 3 ranking position from Dell, due to increased shipments in Europe, China, and Asia.

DisplaySearch said tablet PC shipments continued to decline, registering a 12 percent drop from the year-ago period, resulting in negative growth for the top five brands.

Beginning in the first quarter of 2013, DisplaySearch began including CCE, Medion, NEC, and Mobile Internet and Digital Home Business Group (MIDH) in Lenovo shipments.
