Denon 1st To Ship Dolby Atmos AVRs

Mahwah, N.J. — Denon became the first audio supplier to ship A/V receivers equipped with Dolby Atmos with the earlier-than-expected shipment of two models.

They are the networked 7.2-channel $1,399 AVR-X4100W and 9.2-channel $1,999 AVR-X5200W.

“The X4100 and X5200 are both shipping now with Atmos built-in and ready to go,” said Paul Belanger, D+M Group product manager. The AVRs are “the first and only Atmos AVRs available right now from any brand, no firmware update needed.”

Both AVRs will be displayed at the CEDIA Expo along with two Atmos-equipped electronics components AVRs from sister brand Marantz. Marantz will show the Atmos-equipped SR7009 AVR and the AV7702 preamp/processor, which will be used in a 7.2.4 demo. The Marantz models will ship in September as previously announced.

Denon’s $1,399 model supports an Atmos 5.1.2 speaker configuration out of the box, but a two-channel amplifier can be connected to drive 5.1.4 or 7.1.2 speaker configurations. The $1,999 model supports 5.1.2, 5.1.4, and 7.1.2 configurations out of the box, but with an add-on two-channel amp, it will drive 7.1.4 or 9.1.2 Dolby Atmos configurations.

With the launches, Denon expands its selection of AVRs with HDMI 2.0 connectivity. Both models support HDMI passthrough of UltraHD 4K content at 60 fps with 4:4:4 pure color. Both lack HDCP 2.2 copy protection on their HDMI inputs and outputs. Both also transcode standard-definition and high-definition video sources to Ultra HD at 50/60 fps.

Both models also feature built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Apple AirPlay, DLNA networking and ability to stream thousands of Internet radio stations. They also feature Spotify Connect capability, Pandora and SiriusXM Internet radio.

A front-panel USB port on each AVR connects to USB storage devices and Apple mobile devices to play back their music libraries. Both models can also be controlled from a Denon app for iOS and Android mobile devices.

Onkyo’s first three Atmos-equipped electronics products could be just around the corner. They were scheduled for August shipment, and the company’s web site lists them as “coming soon.” They are the $1,699-suggested TX-NR1030 and $2,399 TX-NR3030 A/V receivers and the $2,499 PR-SC5530 preamp/surround processor.
