Sony Brightens Up Entry-Level Projector Line

Sony bolstered its entry-level FullHD projector lineup with the $1,999-suggested VPL-HW45ES, which delivers higher brightness and a longer lamp life than its predecessor.

The new model delivers 1,800 lumens of brightness compared to 1,700 for use in well-lit rooms, and lamp life goes to 6,000 hours from 5,000.

Other enhancements include a Reality Creation engine from Sony’s other HD and 4K projectors not only to improve brightness but also to improve contrast and resolution compared to its predecessor, Sony said. Also new are a USB port, which allows for easier updates in the field, and an input lag mode, which improves gaming performance. Like its predecessor, it is 3D-capable.

The VPL-HW45ES is replacing the VPL- HW40ES, which has been on promotion at $1,999 since January but was originally available at a suggested $2,499.

“This is a ‘new’ opening point for 1080p for us,” a spokesman said.

It’s targeted to consumers “taking their first step into the home projector market,” the company added.

Other key features include quiet forward-facing fan, built-in RF 3D transmitter to connect to 3D glasses, manual zoom, and wide lens-shift range, the company said.

The next step up in Sony’s Full HD 3D projector lineup is the $3,999 VPL-HW65ES. Sony’s Ultra HD 4K projectors are available from $9,999 to $60,000.
