Panasonic Debuts Tiny Battery For Wearables

Osaka, Japan — Panasonic has developed what’s it’s calling the industry’s smallest cylindrical-shaped rechargeable lithium-ion battery.

The pin-shaped 13 mAh lithium-ion battery has a diameter of 3.5mm and a weight of 0.6 grams, making it suitable for powering small devices such as wearables, and its power output meets the needs for NFC technology applications.

Mass production and shipping are planned to begin in February 2015, with initial monthly production of 100,000 units.

Panasonic said the batteries are designed for use in wearable devices, electronic pens, medical devices such as hearing aids, and measuring devices, among others.
