Houston –– Following a successful pilot in New York City this summer, Goal Zero is taking its Street Charge solar-powered public device-charging stations to cities around the country on a “Solarize America Tour.”

The solar panel and lithium battery-powered Street Charge kiosks allow the public to charge their smartphones using built-in USB ports and charging tips, day or night.

A total of 12 cities will be selected to receive up to three units for approximately 30 days each. The first three cities — Austin, Texas; Miami; and Cambridge, Mass. — were chosen based on criteria such as sunshine hours, walkability, amount of public outdoor spaces and a commitment to raise awareness for solar power.

Nine cities remain to be chosen, and anyone can nominate their city by contacting Goal Zero's marketing VP, Chris Abbruzzese, at chrisa@goalzero.com.

“We learned much from our experience in New York City and are ready to show the rest of the country how easy it is to charge their phones and other handheld devices from the sun,” said Abbruzzese. “We see the sun as a free, clean and sustainable public utility and we’re helping people tap into it.”

The campaign was formally introduced yesterday at the National Recreation and Park Congress and Expo in Houston.

“We couldn’t think of a better place to kick off our Solarize America Tour than the NRPA Congress in Houston, said Joe Atkin, Goal Zero president/CEO. “Parks and recreation officials are always looking for ways to get people outside to relax and recharge. Street Charge is the perfect amenity to encourage that."
