New York - A Pew Research Group study on tablet PC owners has found gathering news and reading email are their primary activities with the device.

The study of 1,200 owners was compiled by Pew's Project for Excellence in Journalism. It found tablet owners spend an average of 95 minutes on the device each day with reading the news, checking email, using social networks, playing games and watching video as the most common activities.

Tablet owners demographically break down as college graduates, 51 percent; are fully employed, 62 percent; with an average salary of $75,000 per year, 53 percent.

These people are news hounds, with 68 percent reporting that they follow the news all the time, compared with 56 percent of the total population. Of that 68 percent, 71 percent would rather read or listen to the news than watch it.

Most of the news gathering is limited to checking headlines, 52 percent, while 42 percent read in-depth articles. About 16 percent watch news videos.
