Sharp Promotes Michael Kelly To Top U.S. Manufacturing Post

Michael Kelly, who joined Sharp in 1984 as a mechanical design engineer, has been promoted to senior VP of Sharp Manufacturing Company of America (SMCA).

In his new role, Kelly will oversee Sharp’s manufacturing facility in Memphis, Tenn., which produces the company’s Microwave Drawer, among other Sharp-brand and OEM cooking products.

Sharp said Kelly’s background and understanding of the needs of the manufacturing division prepares him for the company’s further expansion into home appliances.

He reports directly to Jim Sanduski, president of the recently created Sharp Home Electronics Company of America (SHCA).

“[Kelly’s] considerable experience and deep roots within the company make him a perfect choice to take the reins of SMCA as we embark on expanding our home appliance portfolio for the North American market,” Sanduski said.

SHCA was formed earlier this year after Sharp moved its North American marketing, manufacturing and services units under a single umbrella overseen by Sanduski.

Kelly said the Memphis plant “will continue to play a key role in providing locally assembled products for the North American marketplace.”

Separately, former SMCA head Shotaro Watanabe was promoted to a new role in Japan, where he will join the North American product planning department of the kitchen appliance division within Sharp Corp.’s Yao factory.
