New York — Richard David “Dick” Lewis, co-founder of the New York CE chain Newmark & Lewis, died on March 2.

His age was not disclosed.

The chain, based in Hicksville, N.Y., closed for good in 1992, but in the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s it was the largest CE and appliances retailer in the New York metro area, with almost 70 stores. Its ubiquitous and quirky local TV ads — featuring the tagline “Dick Lewis is Watching!” — made him a household name in and around the city.

Lewis was the son of Edith and Moe Lewis and brother of Beth Hyman. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Florence; children Peter Lewis, Sandy Shorey-Gorovets, Sasha Gorovets, Michelle Kingsley and Todd Kingsley; and seven grandchildren, Barri, Craig, Melanie, Sammy, Eric, Becca and Jack.
