CEDIA & Escient Co-Founder Tom Doherty Joins HTSA

Tom Doherty, one of the original founders of CEDIA and a co-founder of Escient, has joined the Home Technology Specialists of America (HTSA) buying group in a newly created special projects role.

In his new post, the former CEDIA president will be responsible for scoping out new business prospects for HTSA and its members, and developing strategic plans to tap into those opportunities.

He will also help members adopt and execute the strategies, and will develop programs for member education.

A 40-year industry veteran, Doherty began his career by launching an Indianapolis custom-install business, Architectural Audio and Video, in 1985. Four years later he and a handful of fellow integrators created CEDIA, and served as the trade group’s first president.

In 1996 he co-founded Escient, a CD-management systems business. It went on to acquire the company that became Gracenote, which was a critical element in the success of Apple’s iTunes and iPod.

Doherty joins HTSA from Triphase Technologies, an Indianapolis-based custom electronics integrator, where he was senior system designer.

“I can think of no one better credentialed to lead this new role at HTSA,” said Jon Robbins, executive director of the retail and custom-integration buying group. “The breadth of his experience and the depth of his business acumen is the perfect combination to help the organization identify, implement, and dominate new business opportunities.”
