ATSC Elects 4 Board Members

Washington — The Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) elected four new directors, the organization said Wednesday.

The new board members to the organization — which selected the digital TV broadcast system and is at work on future enhancements — include Ira Goldstone, Univision; Richard Friedel, Fox; Sam Matheny, Capitol Broadcasting/WRAL; and Glenn Reitmeier, NBC Universal.

All four will serve three-year terms at the ATSC beginning in January.

In addition, James Kutzner of PBS was re-elected to serve a second term. He will continue to chair Technology Group 3 (TG3) on the development of ATSC 3.0. 

 Other current directors whose terms continue in 2013  are Lynn Claudy, NAB; Mark Eyer, Sony; Brett Jenkins, LIN Media; Brian Markwalter, CEA; Andy Scott, NCTA; Bob Seidel, CBS; Dave Siegler, Cox Media Group; Peter Symes, SMPTE; John Taylor, LG Electronics; and Yiyan Wu, CRC (representing IEEE).

 Board members whose terms are up include chairman John Godfrey, Samsung; Jay Adrick, Harris Broadcast; Tony Caruso, CBC; Craig Todd, Dolby Laboratories; and Wayne Luplow, Zenith (representing IEEE).

Ira Goldstone is Univision Television group engineering VP and a longtime participant in the ATSC and industry digital TV efforts, including previously serving on the board of directors.

Richard Friedel oversees FOX Networks Engineering & Operations, supporting the network’s national and regional television businesses. He manages the FOX Network Center in Los Angeles, which provides facilities and technical services for FOX Broadcasting Co., FOX Sports, FOX Cable Networks Group, Fox International Channels including MundoFox and the Twentieth Television syndication division.

Sam Matheny is Capitol Broadcasting policy and innovation VP, and has more than 20 years of broadcasting and digital networking experience. He is currently focusing on mobile wireless content delivery, smart TV and Internet distribution models. 

Glenn Reitmeier is NBC Universal advanced technology senior VP, leading the company’s technical efforts on industry standards, government policy, commercial agreements, anti-piracy operations and advanced engineering. He is a former ATSC chairman and spent 25 years in digital video R&D at Sarnoff Laboratories.
