Detroit - OnStar has upgraded its Android and iPhone RemoteLink app to let users search for a destination on their smartphone and send it to their vehicle's OnStar or OEM in-dash navigation system.

The OnStar or OEM navigation system will automatically begin guiding them to the destination as soon as the vehicle is started.

The navigation enhancement to the app will be available Aug. 30 in the iTunes and Google Market stores. Current users of the app will receive an update notification on their smartphone.

The app is available for drivers of many 2010 and most 2011 Chevrolets, Buicks, GMCs and Cadillacs outfitted with OnStar.

RemoteLink lets vehicle owners activate all vehicle functions currently available on a traditional key fob, including remote start, horn honking, lights activation, and door locking and unlocking from any distance -- and without their keys or key fob in hand. Via the OnStar service, the app also displays a vehicle's diagnostic information, including fuel-tank level and range, remaining oil life, current and recommended tire pressure and lifetime average miles per gallon. The information will be current as of the last vehicle start.
