Yamaha Adds $1,200 Blu-ray Disc Player

8/25/2008 02:29:00 PM Eastern

Buena Park, Calif.—Just over a week before the CEDIA Expo, upscale home theater systems manufacturer Yamaha announced the availability Monday of a Blu-ray Disc player featuring 12-bit deep color performance and enhanced audio reproduction.

Yamaha’s new BD-S2900 Blu-ray Disc player ($1,199.95 suggested retail) will offer Bonus View and 5.1-channel analog audio outputs.

Model BD-S2900, which ships later this month at a $1,199.95 suggested retail price, incorporates 12-bit Deep Color capability enabling 4,096 shades of three primary colors for up to 68.7 billion possible colors and HD audio bitstream output. Interactivity includes Bonus View picture-in-picture running commentary capability. An included SD card slot will enable users to download some interactive content via PC to an SD card, which can then be played back on the Blu-ray player. It will not have an Ethernet port, so it won’t be BD Live compatible.

The unit chasis design matches the company’s high-end receivers.

Video processing incorporates Chroma Upsampling, pixel detection and 16-step motion video detection.

In addition to providing 1080p output from Blu-ray Discs, the BD-S2900 also offers 1080p output for DVD discs, photos and personal video data, delivering an HD experience from a broad range of today’s popular content sources.

The BD-S2900’s audio capabilities include: compatibility with high bit-rate audio signals (Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD Master Audio and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio), which are output directly from the player to the receiver (via an HDMI cable) without conversion to PCM. The device also offers analog audio output with a 192kHz, 24-bit converter.

Player outputs include HDMI, component video, S-Video and composite video outputs, as well as optical digital, coaxial digital and 5.1-channel analog audio outputs.

An RS-232C interface is added for integration with touch controllers, as well as IR in/out ports for integration into home theater systems. The BD-S2900 also has a graphical user interface for menu and feature display on a connected HDTV.
