XM Suspends Opie & Anthony

5/15/2007 02:58:00 PM Eastern

Washington — XM Satellite Radio announced today that it suspended “Opie and Anthony” for comments aired on “The Opie & Anthony Show” last week.

The show will cease to broadcast for 30 days, effective immediately.

XM said it “deplored” comments aired on the show by Gregg "Opie" Hughes and Anthony Cumia. Although the controversial talk-show hosts apologized shortly after, comments they made on yesterday’s broadcast “put into question whether they appreciate the seriousness of the matter,” said an XM statement.

Last week the show aired a homeless man’s crude comments about Condoleeza Rice, Laura Bush and Queen Elizabeth.

XM said, “The management of XM Radio decided to suspend Opie and Anthony to make clear that our on-air talent must take seriously the responsibility that creative freedom requires of them.”
