XM Signs Up 76,000 Subscribers

Washington – XM Satellite Radio said it now has more than 76,000 subscribers as of March 31, exceeding analyst expectations of a total of 70,000 subscribers.

For the first quarter itself, the company more than doubled its number of subscribers by adding more than 48,000 subscribers, exceeding its target by 15 percent, said XM president and CEO Hugh Panero.

Up to this point XM sales are outpacing the early sales of the DVD player, which until experienced the most successful launch of any CE product. DVD sales reached 46, 774 in its first five months of sales from March 1997 through July 1997, according to NPD Techworld, Port Washington, N.Y. compared to XM’s 76,000 subscribers in 4.5 months, or from mid November 2001 through March 2002.
