Wireless Data Up 123%: CTIA

Washington - Annual U.S.
wireless data traffic grew 123 percent from 2010 (388 billion MB) to 2011
(866.7 billion MB), according to a survey from CTIA - The Wireless Association.

 There was a 43 percent increase in the number
of active smartphones and wireless-enabled PDAs in 2011 compared with 2010,
from 78.2 million to 111.5 million.

Other findings in the
survey:

Wireless subscriber
connections grew 7 percent, from 311 million to 331.6 million.  

The number of active
data-capable devices grew 9 percent, from 270.5 million to 295.1 million.

The number of wireless-enabled
tablets, laptops and modems jumped 49 percent, from 13.6 million to 20.2
million.

Also up: minutes of use
(2 percent), SMS sent and received (12 percent) and MMS sent and received (6 percent).

Not surprisingly, the
average local monthly wireless bill was also up, from $47.00 to $47.21.
