Weiss Succeeds Mondry At CompUSA

Dallas — Larry Mondry has stepped down as president and CEO of CompUSA, effective immediately.

He has been succeeded by Tony Weiss, formerly COO/president of CompUSA stores.

Mondry left the PC specialty chain to “focus his time and energy on private equity ventures,” the company said, and will remain available to counsel Weiss during the transition.

“Larry has been a terrific asset to CompUSA for 16 years,” Weiss said in a statement. “His leadership and expertise in our business have brought us to where we are today, and we’re all thankful.”

Mondry joined the company, then called Software House, in 1990 and was named CEO in 1993. He learned the CE retail trade through a long tenure at Highland Superstores, a family business, and during a brief stint at Lechmere.

More recently, Mondry oversaw the launch of CompUSA’s Techknowledgist IT services operation, and the purchase and integration of Good Guys, the now-defunct West Coast specialty chain, which helped CompUSA expand its A/V assortment. That expansion continued this season with the addition of Mitsubishi HDTVs and a wider flat-panel offering within the chain’s A/V departments.

His successor is an 18-year veteran of CompUSA who has held various operational, merchandising and sales management roles, including business services executive VP and general merchandising manager.

“This is a tremendous time for CompUSA,” Weiss said. “2005 was a good year, and we are uniquely positioning ourselves to provide the best blend of technology products and services our customers want. I’m looking forward to leading our great team through the challenges of this year and beyond.”
