Walgreens Testing Monster Listening Stations

NEW YORK – Walgreens, the No. 1 pharmacy chain, has expanded its test of Monster listening stations with the opening of a new “flagship” format store here last month.

The listening station, one of only a handful in the country, features Monster’s line of NCredible N-Tune headphones, developed with actor Nick Cannon.

The display is an offshoot of Walgreens’ “WellConnected” CE concept department, which debuted last fall in Cambridge, Mass. The concept CE section features an assortment of smartphones, tablets, movies and video games; privatelabel accessories; and headphones from iHome, Jam, Monster and Sony.

It kicked off with an in-store appearance by Cannon in October.

The new Manhattan store is located on 14th Street at Union Square, where it is flanked by Best Buy’s flagship New York showroom and a Best Buy Mobile shop.

Walgreens’ urban flagship format stores are open around the clock and variously feature cafés, juice bars, fresh food, wine, local beers and beauty boutiques. They were developed under former division president and current RadioShack CEO Joe Magnacca to help transform the chain “from a traditional drugstore to a retail health and daily living destination,” he had said.

The company operates about a dozen flagship stores in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles and Washington, as well as a second New York location that opened last March within the Empire State Building.
