VW Offers Garmin Nuvi Option

Dreieich, Germany — Volkswagen added its name to the expanding list of car makers offering its customers a portable GPS option, with a Garmin Nuvi available for all VW models.

Volkswagen is offering a version of the Garmin 7×5 Nuvi series along with a “Click & Ride” mounting kit that sits on the dashboard, rather than the windshield, so it won’t limit the driver’s viewing range.

The Garmin Nuvi is Volkswagen’s first portable GPS dealer option, said Garmin. The unit includes a 4.3-inch widescreen, turn-by-turn directions, real-time traffic, junction view to show highway signs at complex intersections and 3-D views of buildings in some cities.

The kit must be mounted by an installer and then the GPS can be inserted and quick-released. The kit may also be removed as when the car comes off lease without harming the dashboard, said Volkswagen.   Pricing was not available.

Garmin said it continues to pursue OEM deals with car makers, and currently it offers GPS products for VW, MINI, Citroen C3 Picasso, Volvo, Honda Access Europe, BMW, Jeep and Suzuki, as well as for motorcycle makers BMW, Harley-Davidson and Buell.

Garmin also supplies factory- or port-installed GPS for the Ford Work solution and the Chrysler Jeep in 2011, it said.
