Vudu Looks To Ad-Supported Options

5/13/2009 10:16:00 AM Eastern

Santa Clara, Calif. — Internet-based video service Vudu said this week that it has partnered with online video platform Brightcove to soon deliver ad-supported entertainment streams, in addition to its traditional video-on demand offerings.

The first application from the tandem is a MyPlay feature that will distribute ad-supported music videos from Sony Music over the Internet through Sony Music's MyPlay Video Network affiliate program.

Presumably, the technology eventually could be extended to movies and television programming as well.

The companies said their partnership will include multiple advertising platforms, allowing Brightcove customers to maintain their existing online video monetization strategy and infrastructure while expanding their distribution reach to the television, the companies said.

Brightcove’s platform allows content owners to retain control of their advertising inventory while streamlining backend costs associated with delivering ad-supported streams.

Vudu will be the first partner to support Brightcove-powered, ad-supported content distribution on a set-top-box.

Vudu currently distributes movies and TV content in standard- and high-definition via proprietary set-top players starting from $149.

Its current VOD model offers a library of 15,000 movie and TV shows for rentals starting at 99 cents (standard definition) or for long-term purchase, with downloads starting from $1.99 for certain TV episodes and $4.99 for some movies. Its library of HD selections lists more than 1,800 titles.
