Washington – The
U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a second recall of
three portable dehumidifier models that were first cited as fire hazards last
December.
The units,
produced in China and imported by LG under the Goldstar and Comfort-Aire
brands, pose fire and burn hazards to consumers due to the potential for a
short circuit in the compressor’s power connector.
The USCP said the second recall was prompted
by reports of four additional fires, for a total of 15, and a low
consumer-response rate. No injuries were reported, although five of the fires
led to extensive property damage.
About 98,000
dehumidifiers were sold nationwide at The Home Depot, Walmart and Heat
Controller from January 2007 through June 2008 for between $140 and $150.
Consumers are
urged to disconnect the product and return it to an authorized LG service
center for a free repair. The recalled models are the Goldstar GHD30Y7 and DH305Y7
and the Comfort-Aire BHD-301-C.
