Toshiba: Digital Products Down In Q3

Tokyo – Toshiba reported lower sales and an operating loss
in its digital products segment in its fiscal third quarter, a group that
consists of its LCD TV and PC businesses.

Digital products segment sales in its fiscal third quarter,
ended Dec. 31, 2011, were down 25 percent to 430,759 million yen. The operating
loss was 15,163 million yen, compared with a year-on-year loss of 27,189
million yen.

Toshiba said its PC business had positive income but its
visual products business, such as LCD TV, saw operating income decrease on
lower unit sales in Japan and intensifying price competition.

Sales in its electronic devices segment were down 10 percent
to 371,030 million yen, but its operating income grew from 7,824 million yen
the prior year to 11,501 million yen in the current quarter.

Hard disk drives, mostly for mobile applications, drew
better sales, but semiconductor sales were off due to the yen, flooding in
Thailand, price declines in memories, and a falloff for discrete semiconductors
and system LSI. And LCDs saw lower sales.

Overall, Toshiba reported lower consolidated net sales and a
net loss in its fiscal third quarter. Consolidated net sales decreased by 141.1
billion yen, to 1,441.4 billion yen ($18.5 billion), and the net loss decreased
by 23 billion yen, to 10.6 billion yen ($134.8 million).
