Stereo TV Sales Off, Share Up In Auguster

Sales to dealers of stereo direct-view color TVs were down for the second consecutive month in August, but also had an improved market share again, because the decline was smaller than that of the direct-view color category as a whole.

EIA reports stereo color sales for the month at 862,400, down 5.4% from August last year, for an eight-month total of 6.02 million, off 2.2%. As previously reported, total direct-view color sales were off 15.6% for the month and down 5.5% for the full period.

So stereo accounted for 48.1% of total color sales in August. That was up from the 43% share captured in the same month last year but off from the 49.4% held in July. Stereo's color market share for the full eight months was 45.2%, up from the year-earlier 43.6%.

Based on traditional selling patters, stereo color set sales in August were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 10.5 million. That was a significant drop from the 11.3 million rate of July and left the average monthly rate for the year to date at 10.8 million.
