The Spot Messenger
is a handheld device that lets hikers, skiers and other outdoor enthusiasts
send messages even in remote or dangerous areas. The device combines GPS
location technology with satellite messaging to work in remote areas where
cellular coverage may fail. It lets users press a button to message a list of
preset contacts, and it saves the user's location waypoints. In an emergency,
the user can send S.O.S./9-1-1 alerts. Friends can also track the user in real
time via Google Maps.
Spot also offers a
roadside assistance subscription service.
November 2007, the Spot device has helped initiate more than 300 rescues in 51
countries, said Spot. The device has also transmitted more than 12 million
"peace-of-mind" and "track-me" messages worldwide.
