Tokyo – Sony Computer
Entertainment (SCE) unveiled a new slimmer version of its PlayStation3
(CECH-2000A) video game console, featuring a 120GB hard disk drive.
The new version of
the console will launch Sept. 1 and will carry a $299 suggested retail, the
company said Tuesday. The console’s cabinet volume has been reduced by
two-thirds.
With the
introduction of the new PS3 system, SCE said
it will reduce the price of the current PS3 with 80GB HDD to $299 and the 160GB
HDD version will drop to $399, both effective Aug. 18.
The company said
it will also introduce a new PS3 logo, concurrent with the release of the new
slimmer PlayStation3 model.
Meanwhile, SCE’s European
and American units also revealed plans to shortly launch a “minis” section on the
PlayStationStore, offering a range of all-new downloadable games for the PlayStation
Portable (PSP).
Available
exclusively via digital distribution, “minis” will have a 100MB size limit, to
enable quick and easy to downloading to either the upcoming PSPgo or to the
more than 52 million PSP units that have sold worldwide.
The European and
American units also introduced a digital reader for the PSP
(PlayStationPortable).
The new service
will allow PSP owners to access a range of media on their PSP. The service will
launch with Digital Comics this December in select countries, the U.S, and
regions in Europe with other PAL territories
to follow in 2010.
Leading comic
publishers have signed up for the service, Sony said, including giant Marvel
Entertainment.
Content from other
partners such as IDW Publishing, iVerse Media and others, as well as graphic
novels for bite-sized entertainment on demand and on the go, will be available,
Sony said.
