Sony Unveils First Home 3D SXRD Projector

ATLANTA

— Fresh from a world premiere
at the recent IFA conference in
Berlin, Sony’s first ES series 3D home
projector will be unveiled at this week’s
CEDIA Expo.

Like Sony’s Bravia 3DTV line, the
model VPL-VW90ES 3-chip SXRD projector
uses active-shutter glasses technology
to produce 3D images.

The unit is slated to ship in the U.S.
in November at a $10,000 anticipated
street retail, and will be distributed only
through authorized ES dealers in the
Sony Retailer Network.

The projector produces projected
FullHD 1080p 3D images using its Advanced
Iris 3 technology that enables a
150,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. They
system is said to produce “true depth of
color and brightness.”

Brightness is listed at 1,000 ANSI
lumens.

The VPL-VW90ES employs an upgraded
SXRD 240Hz panel that minimizes image distortion (“crosstalk”), Sony said.

The retail price includes two pair of
Active 3D (Sony’s active-shutter 3D
glasses) and a 3D transmitter.

The projector will also display highquality
2D video images and will be able
to simulate 3D images from 2D material.

“The launch of our first 3D home
projector marks the latest step in Sony
realizing its 3D World vision,” said Tak
Nakane, Sony Professional product
manager. “From capturing images in 3D,
through to the production and delivery
stages, Sony is uniquely placed to deliver
an incredible 3D viewer experience both
at home and in the cinema. The projector
also opens up another dimension for
gamers too. People will be able to play
a rapidly increasing number of 3D titles
such as Gran Turismo 5, and Wip3out
in crystal-clear high definition, something
we believe is going to appeal hugely to
the gaming community.”

The projector, which puts out a low fan
noise of just 22db, can be customized
to meet a wide range of room conditions
and viewing material and is said to be
simple to setup.

As Sony’s first ES front projector, the
VPL-VW90ES will come with a five-year
warranty.
