Sony Starts Shipping Fall DVD Burner Line

San Jose, Calif. — Sony today started shipping the first model in its four-SKU, multi-format DVD burner line.

Three of the units are shipping in Sony’s 830 series and utilizes Sony’s 12th generation optical storage technology, the company said. These all feature speeds of 18x DVD±R, 8x DVD±R DL, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW, 12x DVD-RAM for data backup, 48x CD-R, 32x CD-RW recording.

The fourth model is the DRX-S50U. It specifications include 8xDVD±R, 4x DVD±R DL, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW, and 24x CD-R/RW.

The first 830 series unit to hit stores is the DRU-830A internal drive. It is now available for $70, after $20 mail-in rebate.

Following in October are theDRX-830U and DRX-S50U. The former is an external version of the DRU-830A, $100 after $30 mail in rebate, while the latter is a slimline external drive that will sell for about $130.

Shipping in December is the DRX-830UL-T, $120 after $30 mail in rebate. It supports the Windows/Macintosh platforms.
