Sony, Samsung Sign Patent Deal

New York – Sony and Samsung agreed to cross license their patents in a moved designed to improve competitiveness.

The agreement, inked on Dec. 14, allows limited mutual usage of each firm’s patent portfolios. The deal is the culmination of one year’s work between the two CE giants. The companies said the goal was to create a mutually beneficial relationship that would allow each to use the other’s patent portfolio to remain competitive.

The limitations placed in the deal include Sony retaining sole possession of information Digital Reality Creation, PlayStatiin architecture, while Samsung will keep its rights to Digital Natural Image Engine and its home networking technology. Organic Light Emitting Diode display patents are also excluded from the deal.
