Sony Ending ImageStation

San Diego — Sony is shuttering its ImageStation online photo service as of February 2008.

In a letter sent to users and posted online, the company said most of the site’s functionality would be shut down on Nov. 12.

Sony is recommending that ImageStation customers transfer their images to Shutterfly, one of the major online printing destinations not affiliated with Sony’s digital still camera competitors. Sony customers who do not wish to transfer their images to Shutterfly can download their photos back to their PCs or purchase them on CD or DVD.

In a FAQ page, Sony explained that it had decided to close the photo service to “focus on the company’s core businesses, products and services.

“In the early days of digital photography Sony realized the need to provide an online photo service to support their digital camera customers. In the years since, many capable online photo services have become available, and our customers now have a broad range of options for storing, sharing, printing and creating photo gifts.”
