London — Sony Mobile Communications unveiled a pair of Android smartphones positioned below its recently unveiled Xperia Z flagship.
The new LTE-equipped Xperia SP and the Xperia L, which is equipped with HSPA+, will roll out globally in the second quarter, but Sony declined to specify if the U.S. is among the target markets. Specifications indicate, however, that the phones are destined for markets outside the U.S., given that the SP’s LTE bands do not include U.S. bands and that the Xperia L’s HSPA+ bands include two U.S. bands — AWS and 850MHz — likely designed for use by foreign visitors roaming in the U.S.
The LTE-equipped Xperia Z was launched at International CES with first-quarter availability planned in global markets, although U.S. availability date hasn’t been announced to date. The 7.9mm-thick Android 4.1 phone features quad-core 1.5GHz CPU, 2GB RAM, 5-inch 1080p display with pixel density of 443 ppi, and nearfield communication (NFC), which can be used for automatic pairing with other NFC-equipped Sony products to share audio, video and photos.
The new Xperia SP with LTE features 4.6-inch 1,280 by 720 display, Android 4.1 OS, 1.7GHz dual-core CPU, 8-megapixel camcorder with 1080p video capture, 1GB RAM, Mobile High-definition Link (MHL) port, NFC for automatic pairing, high dynamic range image capture, DLNA, PlayStation certification, hot spot capability, Sony Exmor imaging sensor used in Sony digital cameras, and Sony Bravia Engine 2 video-display technology used in Sony TVs.
The new Xperia L features Android 4.1 OS, 4.3-inch 854 by 480 display, 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, 8-megapixel 720p camcorder, VGA front camera, PlayStation certification, DLNA, hot spot capability, FM tuner and Exmor image sensor. The company’s literature did not list Bravia Engine 2 technology.
All three phones access Sony’s range of audio and video streaming and download services.
