Sharp, Mets Star Team Up For Children

Mahwah, N.J. — Sharp Electronics said it will work with New York Mets centerfielder Mike Cameron on a new charity event for New York City-area children, called “Catches for Kids.”

Sharp, Cameron and other donors being solicited will make financial pledges for every fly ball putout Cameron makes this year at the Mets’ Shea Stadium home field. Collected funds will go to the Starlight Children’s Foundation for critically ill kids living in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

“Sharp is a long-term sponsor of the Mets, and supporting the ‘Catches for Kids’ program further enables us to connect with fans while supporting a worthwhile organization,” said Andy Kritzer, senior director of strategic marketing and communications, Sharp Electronics. “We encourage other Mets sponsors to become involved in this program.”

“It makes me feel good to know the more catches I make at Shea, the more it helps the Starlight children,” Cameron said. “Over $7,000 has been raised to date through “Catches for Kids.” In addition to fund raising, Cameron will hold monthly pre-game catches in centerfield for children served by the Starlight Foundation.

The Starlight Children’s Foundation serves over 200,000 critically, chronically, and terminally ill children throughout New York, New Jersey and Connecticut each year. In addition to granting wishes for sick children, Starlight provides programs on hospital pediatric wards, funds special projects for hospitalized children and conducts a variety of outpatient activities. Starlight’s goal is to help seriously ill children experience the simple joys of being a child.

In addition, Starlight provides mobile movie and game units called Fun Centers to pediatric wards, outpatient clinics and emergency rooms.

The units incorporate a video game player, DVD player and a Sharp AQUOS Liquid Crystal Television. Fun Centers have been effective in countering depression, boredom and stress, which can impede the healing process in young patients.
