Sears Names New CE/Majaps Chief

Sears veteran Dan Laughlin has been named to the newly created position of senior VP/general merchandise manager of appliances and electronics as part of a reorganization of the company’s core hardlines business.

The combined CE and majap categories represent approximately 50 percent of Sears’ total sales.

Reporting to Laughlin are Tina Settecase, VP/general manager of major appliances, and John Schlenner, recently named divisional merchandise manager of consumer electronics. Laughlin will also oversee Sears’ small appliance business.

Laughlin, who joined Sears in 1972, had been appointed senior VP/general manager of the chain’s 1,300 off-the-mall stores this past May, having previously run the unit’s Appliance Builder Direct, dealer store and builder distributor operations, among others.

Five of Sears’ off-the-mall businesses carry major appliances and two sell consumer electronics.

Succeeding Laughlin is Beryl Buley, who joins Sears from Kohl’s, where he was executive VP for stores.

The restructuring was prompted by the pending retirement of Sears’ hardlines chief Lyle Heidemann, who will leave his post as executive VP/general manager of home and off-mall stores at year’s end.

Both Laughlin and Buley report to Mark Cosby, executive VP of Sears, Roebuck and Co. and president of its full-line stores.
