SanDisk Adds Biometrics to New USB Drive

Sunnyvale, Calif. — SanDisk jumped on the biometrics bandwagon with the introduction of its new Cruzer Profile USB flash drive with integrated fingerprint recognition technology.

The USB 2.0 high speed Profile protects data by requiring fingerprint authentication before a user can access information stored inside. The recognition can be programmed directly into the drive without loading any software onto a computer, SanDisk said.

The unit can also recognize swiped fingers at a number of different angles, SanDisk said.

The Profile will be available in April in 512MB and 1GB capacities for a suggested retail price of $99.99 and $199.99, respectively. It features two LEDs, one to indicate data transfer and another for the fingerprint scanner.

Cruzer Profile also will provide a portable password manager, which will work on any host PC, and bundle a lanyard for carrying the device.

The Cruzer Profile will come loaded with CruzerLock 2 data encryption software; CruzerSync synchronization software; and Cruzer PocketCache, a file back up program, which allows for file backups with minimal memory consumption.
