Despite a sluggish marketplace, Samsung reported overall second quarter sales of $8.6 billion, up about 20 percent from the $6.9 billion recorded in the second quarter of last year.

Company pretax income hit $2.1 billion in the second quarter, up from the $819.1 million in the same three months in 2001. Overall operating income for the second quarter was $1.6 billion, compared with $517.3 million in the same three months last year.
