6/12/2006 02:05:00 PM Eastern

San Jose, Calif. — Samsung Electronics has introduced a new DVD burner capable of burning at 18x speed.

The SH-Si82D is a triple-format drive capable of burning DVD-RW/+RW/RAM. The 18x rewriting speed is attained with -RW and +RW rewritable media, while DVD-RAM discs are written to 12x speed. When writing at 18x the drive is about 5 percent faster than the older 16x write technology, Samsung said.

The drive can also burn to double-layer discs at 8x speed.

It is shipping in June with an estimated street price of $69.99.
