Samsung HDTV Passes CableCARD Certification

12/19/2003 03:06:00 PM Eastern

Louisville, Colo. - CableLabs, the standards setting organization for the cable television industry, said it has certified a Samsung digital television set for uni-directional CableCARD compliance.

CableLabs said the fully integrated HDTV set – CRT-based HDTV rear-projection model CDP-5256W-- completed certification testing under the CableLabs OpenCable project. Samsung's DTV will directly receive HDTV and other one-way digital programs via cable, including premium services, without the need for a set-top box.

The DTV, which is slated for a mid-year delivery, will be interoperable on OpenCable digital cable systems throughout the United States and Canada.

'This CableCARD-enabled HDTV is the first of many OpenCable products that Samsung will develop and launch in collaboration with CableLabs, cable operators, and retailers,' said Stephen Goldstein, Business Development Manager, Samsung Electronics America, Inc.

The CableCARD device will enable manufacturers and retailers to sell throughout the country interoperable navigation devices, such as set-top boxes and DTVs that enable consumers to receive premium digital services. CableCARD removable security modules enable a device to decode encrypted, or scrambled, content delivered from digital cable systems.

The CableLabs certification indicates the device has passed a series of tests for compliance with the uni-directional version of the OpenCable system, and has demonstrated interoperability with multiple cable distribution networks.

Previously, CableLabs has certified three Panasonic models under the OpenCable project. The agency is expected to announce certification on other models for other manufacturers in coming weeks.
