Samsung Creates Android Media Hub For Home

Barcelona, Spain — Samsung came to the Mobile World Congress to introduce its HomeSync home media hub.

The device is a 1TB Android-based drive that connects to a TV to display stored content and stream content via Wi-Fi to multiple Galaxy mobile devices in the home.

The device, available in select countries beginning in April, also lets users download content and apps from the Google Play store and stream content, including 1080p video, from multiple Galaxy mobile devices. The device also stores photos and pictures.

A home can create up to eight separate accounts with individual user names and passwords to protect privacy.

Pricing and launch countries were not announced.

The drive features 1.7GHz dual-core CPU, 1GB RAM, Gigabit Ethernet port, Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n with dual-band n, Bluetooth 4.0, two USB 3.0 ports, HDMI 1.4 output, MicroUSB and optical audio output.

It supports multiple DRM technologies, including HDCP 1.3/2.1. Supported video codecs include H.264, H.263, MPEG-4, WMV 7/8, DivX and others. Supported audio codecs include MP3, AC, WMA lossless, FLAC, AAC+, Ogg Vorbis, WAV and others.
