Santa Clara,
Calif. –
said Wednesday that its
RoxioNow platform is headed to a new HP MovieStore application for the HP
TouchPad, and at the same time revealed a multi-year agreement to use RoxioNow
technology for streaming services offered by Best Buy Canada.
Rovi, which
recently acquired former owner of the RoxioNow system Sonic, said HP’s first WebOS
tablet has joined the ranks of a number of HP notebooks and desktop PCs that are
already powered by the RoxioNow entertainment platform.
Under the terms of
a new licensing agreement, Rovi is providing content licensing and infrastructure
services that include a Cloud-based movie and TV locker that provides HP
customers persistent access to movie and TV content across HP devices.
Rovi currently
enables white-label storefronts for a number of brick-and-mortar retailers,
cable operators, PC manufacturers, consumer electronics makers, and Hollywood
studios’ direct-to-consumer initiatives.
Meanwhile, Best
Buy Canada is now licensing the RoxioNow technology for its CinemaNow service
that is currently available in the United States.
The multi-year
agreement is expected to enable a service launch in September through Best Buy
Canada and sister company Future Shop.
The service will
be available initially online and then expand to offer access through a range
of Internet-connected consumer electronics devices, Sonic said.
CinemaNow will
allow Canadian consumers to stream titles from a catalog of premium
entertainment including new movie releases and next-day TV shows.
The Canadian
CinemaNow service is expected to be available on select connected TVs, Blu-ray
players, game consoles, set-top boxes, PCs and mobile devices, and will provide
access to a broad library of new movies, TV shows, independent titles and older
catalog films.
