12/22/2008 11:06:00 AM Eastern

Saratoga, Calif. — Set-top box manufacturer Roku said it has just released support for Netflix high-definition video streaming over the Roku Internet video player.

Roku said the set-top will make use of streaming HD content delivered via the Netflix Internet video service using advanced compression technology. This system will enable viewing HD content over consumer broadband connections.

Roku said Netflix is the first content provider to deliver HD content to the $99 Roku player. Additional providers of HD content are expected in the first quarter of 2009, Roku said. New software enabling the HD capability will be automatically delivered to all Roku players free-of-charge over the course of the next few weeks.
