Report: Samsung Ends RealD 3DTV Plan

Los Angeles –

RealD

,
developer of 3D projection technologies and glasses for movie theaters, said in
its fiscal second quarter financial statement this week that its deal with
Samsung to produce 3DTVs based on RealD’s hybrid active/passive 3D technology
has fallen through.

RealD issued revised expectations for its license agreement with
the

Samsung Electronics

‘ LCD business,
after Samsung apparently decided not to go forward with the plan at this time.

According to a statement from Samsung: “In order to continue our market leadership in liquid crystal displays, Samsung has decided to focus on our own initiatives of 3D technology and continues to research and develop next-generation 3D display technologies, including a glasses-free 3D solution for the home.”

A deal between the two companies was first announced in May 2011,
saying that Samsung would manufacture 3D LCD TV panels using RealD 3D display technology,
with a market introduction expected in early 2012.

“RealD has recently learned that Samsung’s initiative to
manufacture panels under the RealD license agreement is not being pursued at
this time,” RealD said in a statement on its financial report. “As a result,
RealD is now pursuing other potential partners for its 3D display technology
among consumer electronics panel manufacturers.”

The technology would have allowed Samsung to produce 3DTVs that
allowed the use of passive 3D glasses, like those used in movie theaters, but
would have also preserved some of the benefits of active-shutter 3D technology
by placing right/left-eye switching in the panel instead of the glasses.

The design as expected by some analysts to be a higher quality,
but more expensive approach to passive 3D TV systems based on Film Pattern
Retarder technology.
